The onX Backcountry App, on your mobile device, uses cell phone towers and GPS satellites to determine your location, which will always be much more accurate than what your computer is capable of.
The location displayed in the onX Backcountry Web Map is based on internet traffic routed through hubs scattered around your area. Most of the time, the closest location your computer will be able to find is the location of one of these hubs, which may or may not be where you are currently located.
If you're having issues with the Web Map reporting your location at all, you can review the location permissions for your browser – click the links below for browser-specific instructions:
- Google Chrome browser location settings
- Microsoft Edge browser location settings
- Safari browser location settings
- Mozilla Firefox browser location settings
Refreshing the Web Map page may give you a better location reading. If that doesn't work, you can also try clearing your browser history and reloading the page. However, it will most likely not be able to pinpoint your exact physical location.
- Deleting your browser history in Google Chrome.
- Deleting your browser history in Microsoft Edge.
- Deleting your browser history in Safari.
- Deleting your browser history in Mozilla Firefox.
Note: the inability of your browser to report your exact location is not a bug or limitation of the onX Web Map – it is specifically linked to your web browser approximating your location and is largely dependent on your geographic location and ISP.
Users living in remote/rural areas will typically have less accurate locations reported due to greater dispersion between internet activity hubs.
